How to choose a wedding photographer for your Tipi wedding

Your wedding photos are going to be a lasting reminder of one of the most important days of your life. It’s therefore understandable, that you want them to be perfect. However, for that to happen, you need to ensure you’ve chosen the right wedding photographer for your tipi wedding.

Here’s our top ten tips for choosing a wedding photographer for your tipi wedding.

#1: Know how you want to remember your day

When you’re planning your big day, you have an image in your head as to how it will look as a finished day. It’s that you want captured in your wedding photos. Your wedding day is a story to treasure, so you want the photos to reflect this – and you need to be able to clarify your vision to your wedding photographer.

#2: Have a selection of shots in mind

Following on from the above tip, it’s a good idea to have a rough idea of the type of shots you’re after. A wedding photographer will have their basic list of shots to take, but they also need to be open to your suggestions – no matter how quirky or sane! So have a look at online wedding day photographs to get an idea of what you like.

#3: Pick the photographer that can provide what you want

When you’re looking for a photographer, go with the one that can provide you with what you’re after, not necessarily the one who’s the cheapest. You’re after photos that capture your special day – and that really is priceless. Obviously you will have a budget in mind, but don’t make it the initial criteria when shortlisting photographers.

#4: Meet the photographer early in the process

You want a photographer that makes you feel at ease and who listens to your requirements. When you’ve shortlisted a couple, meet them to see how you interact with each other.

#5: Ask to see a portfolio of several of their previous weddings

This will help you gauge their experience as a photographer as well as the consistency of their photographs. How well do they adapt to different lighting situations? Have they previously taken wedding photographs outside and in a Tipi? What type of photography are they most comfortable with? How well have they portrayed the story of each wedding? It’s not necessary for them to have photographed in your chosen venue – but it helps if they have.

#6: Try to have a pre-wedding venue walk around with the photographer

Regardless of whether they’ve previously photographed at the venue, it pays to have a walk around, so you can both bounce ideas off each other.

#7: What is their backup plan?

What plans do they have in place, in case they’re unable to attend on the day? Will they leave you high and dry or will they provide a suitably qualified replacement?

#8: What are their timescales?

Once your wedding is over, you want your hands on your Tipi wedding photographs as soon as possible. So, find out beforehand, how long you’re going to need to wait. Also, you need to establish how long they’re going to need for photographs on the day.

#9: Go with your heart

As with most things, you’ll instinctively know when you’ve met the ideal photographer for your big day. If in doubt, always go with your heart.

#10: Nail down the extras

Finally, once you’ve chosen your photographer, nail down the extras, with these seven questions:

  • How much do they charge for extra photographs?

  • Do you get to keep the proofs or do you have to purchase them?

  • How many photographs on average, are included in the fee?

  • How much do extra hours cost, if you want them to stay on?

  • Do you own the copyright to your photographs or do they?

  • How long will it take to get proofs?

  • What’s the overall timescale for the completed wedding album?

The above ten tips will help you choose the best wedding photographer for your Tipi wedding – ensuring your wedding day photographs are a great lasting reminder of one of the most important days of your life.
